Would You Like Freedom Fries With That?

Wednesday, March 12th, 2003

I’ve been hearing a lot lately about people changing the name of their foods just to prove a point to France. Okay, so France hasn’t been supporting us but why must I change the names of the foods I eat? Back during World War II this practice was acceptable because Hitler was being down right evil. But France is not, they just don’t have a backbone to support us in going to war.

I for one will not call my foods by a different name. If a restaurant wants to force it on me then I’ll take my money elsewhere to an establishment that has chosen to remain mature about the whole thing.

What AD&D Character Are You?

Wednesday, March 12th, 2003

Found this over on Small Values of Cool. Apparently you can take a quiz and find out what AD&D character best fits you. Here are the results of my quiz:

I Am A: Lawful Good Human Fighter Paladin

Alignment: Lawful Good characters are the epitome of all that is just and good. They believe in order and governments that work for the benefit of all, and generally do not mind doing direct work to further their beliefs.

Race: Humans are the ‘average’ race. They have the shortest life spans, and because of this, they tend to avoid the racial prejudices that other races are known for. They are also very curious and tend to live ‘for the moment’.

Primary Class: Fighters are the warriors. They use weapons to accomplish their goals. This isn’t to say that they aren’t intelligent, but that they do, in fact, believe that violence is frequently the answer.

Secondary Class: Paladins are the Holy Warriors. They have been chosen by a God/dess to be their representative on Earth, and must follow the code of that deity, or risk severe penalties. They tend towards being righteous, but not generally to excess.

Deity: Tyr is the Lawful Good god of justice. He is also known as Tyr Grimjaws, Wounded Tyr, the Maimed God, and Blind Tyr. He appears as a warrior, missing his hand. Followers of Tyr are concerned first and foremost with justice – discovering the truth and punishing the guilty for their crimes. They wear blue and purple robes with a white sash, a white gauntlet on the left hand, and a black gauntlet on the right, to symbolize Tyr’s lost hand. Their preferred weapon is the warhammer. Tyr’s symbol is a set of scales resting on a warhammer.

The Art of Deception

Friday, February 28th, 2003

I’ve been reading “The Art of Deception” by Kevin Mitnick & William L. Simon (ISBN 0-471-23712-4) which deals with the biggest security hole of all, The Human. What he does in the book is layout various social engineering scenarios (each using different tactics) and then goes through “Analyzing the Con”, showing what the con did and what the victim could/should have done to prevent the attack. Some of the scenarios he describes he actually carried out himself! As you read through the chapters the stakes and the methods of the attacks get higher and more advanced and somewhere around Chapter 10 you realize that humans really are the weak link in security. No matter who you work for or how large your business is I suggest you pick up this book and study it! At the end of the book Mitnick gives sample security policies and other methods to avoid the social engineer.

In personal perspective, I work as an 18-wheeler truck loader for a large shipping company. After reading this book I’m embarrased at the security for my facility. But as a grunt man there isn’t much I can do about it aside from staying cautious on my own.
